About the Brookville Branch

In 1917, a group of citizens formed the Brookville Library Association with the goal of developing a library in Brookville. The Clio Club, a local women's literary society, spearheaded the effort. The library opened on September 8, 1917 with 125 books and 90 members who paid $1 per year for the privilege of checking out books. It was open four hours per week and was staffed mostly by Clio Club members who were paid $7.50 a year for their efforts. The Brookville Library evolved and changed locations several times over the years. In 1936, the Dayton Public Library reorganized the collection and made Brookville the first county branch of the Dayton system. The current building was opened to the public in August, 1985. A unique stainless steel sculpture by artist Stan Thomson, called "The Visitors," greets patrons near the entrance of the library.
